When I was growing up as a kid in New Hampshire, my mother took us to church every Sunday. We learned about Jesus, we sang 100 year old hymns to organ music accompaniment, and we routinely prayed to God for guidance and protection along the path of life. As an adult, I still carry that default framework with me into everything I do in life, but the picture I see before me now is far more expansive than could ever be contained by the puny frame of religion.
The vast universe created by my God, with its wealth of physical and spiritual riches bestowed upon this realm, the pounding curiosity and deep desire for understanding innate within all of us, the uniquely glorious peoples disseminated as perfect raindrops from the bubbling well of Spirit reaching out across all corners of the globe and beyond....all that goes far beyond any religious text I have ever studied.
Sitting my children in Sunday school feels, in a way, like giving them watered down juice. I've considered giving them only the basics the same way I got them at that age, and letting them discover and investigate further on their own as they grow, but I feel like I'd be cheating them out of half of the movie.
And so I try, in the best ways I know how, to combine my Baptist upbringing, his Catholic traditions, and our innate knowing of things like energy, and vibration, spirit, and attunement. We teach them to love, we teach them to follow a Jesus example, we teach them they are fearfully and wondrously made, and we teach them that they are magical, powerful, and connected with the source of all energy.
Emmalexa Rose, at 4 years old has the Universe in the palm of her tiny hand already. She found a scrap of paper and started "reading" it as a prayer she made up as she went along. It combines our faith background with Mommy's methodology of energy healing, for which this tiny child already has an incredible affinity. She is joy, and she is light.
